How do I renew my Minnesota architect license?

  1. Complete 24-hours of continuing education including 2-hours of professional ethics.
  2. Renew your license online by paying the $120 renewal fee

What are the Minnesota Continuing Education Guideline Requirements?

Minnesota architects must complete a minimum of 24 continuing education hours including 2-hours of Professional Ethics by June 30th of even-numbered years.

Do I need to complete continuing education requirements for my AIA membership?

Yes, as an Architect member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), 18 learning unit hours are required per calendar-year for membership renewal.  Of these 18 hours, at least 12 hours must be in subjects designated as Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW).

Are AIA approved classes accepted to renew my Minnesota architect license?

Yes.

I have extra Minnesota architects continuing education hours, can I apply them to the next renewal cycle?

Yes, you may carry-over a maximum of 12 PDHs to the next two-year cycle for hours obtained above and beyond the required 24 PDH. You will still need to keep documentation of the activities you carry-over in your files in case of an audit.  If you are carrying-over PDHs for the next biennium, you will need to keep that documentation for at least two years after the cycle the hours are applied to.

I completed 4 hours of ethics training, can I carry 2 of the hours over to cover my ethics requirement for the next renewal?

No, you must obtain 2 hours of ethics training during each reporting period. However, you may use the extra 2 hours toward your 12 PDH carryover allowance.

I am exempt from continuing education for this reporting period. Can I carryover my hours to the next period?

No, if you are exempt from continuing education, you cannot carry your hours over.

Who notifies Minnesota of my architect continuing education?

Licensees are required to report the total number of hours on your renewal form – either online or paper.  Records and supporting documentation need to be kept for a period of two years after submission to the Board.  If you are selected for audit, you will be contacted and asked to submit supporting documentation of your reported activities. Architects Training Institute will store your continuing education records for 6-years at no extra cost.

If I allow my license to expire, would I need to obtain continuing education hours if I am interested in reinstating my license?

Yes, in order to reinstate your license or certificate you will need to do everything you would have done had you kept your license/certificate current during the time of your lapse (i.e. pay all back fees, late fees, and provide proof of continuing education). You will need to report up to 48 hours of continuing education, including up to 4 hours of ethics, depending on how many years your license has lapsed.

I am renewing late and did not get all my continuing education prior to June 30 of the renewal period that just ended, what should I do?

If you do not have enough hours prior to June 30, you may use however many PDH that you have obtained after June 30 to reach the 24 PDH needed to renew your license for the current period. Note you must then earn 24 more PDH between now and the end of the current period in order to renew for the next period. (You can’t use the same PDH hours toward two different periods.)
